From February 9, 2026 of the Ilmo. Mayor of the Badajoz City Council, by which the contest The Flight of the Word: Poetry and The Story in Extremadura 2026 is announced.

Official description of the call

First. Object. The contest aims to stimulate the creativity of those who love books and what they contain and with the purpose of offering new writers the opportunity to see part of their works published. The Department of Culture calls for the twenty-ninth consecutive year the experience called The Flight of the Word. It brings together authors born, resident or related to Extremadura. Being a meeting point for young and old, poets and poetry fans, narrators and storytelling fans, authors of recognized prestige and budding writers, all of them committed to recovering and elevating the art of poetry and storytelling in the cultural context of Extremadura. The award of the prize will be carried out on a competitive basis in accordance with the principles of publicity, transparency, objectivity, equality, non-discrimination, effectiveness and efficiency established in article 8.3 of Law 38/2003, of November 17, General Subsidies. Second. Beneficiaries. All interested parties over eighteen years of age, born, resident, and related to Extremadura may participate, with a maximum of two poems and one story per person. In any case, people who, meeting the specific participation requirements established in the call, are subject to any of the causes of prohibitions to obtain the status of beneficiaries established in article 13 of Law 38/2003 General Subsidies will not be able to obtain the status of beneficiaries. Likewise, they must be up to date with their tax and Social Security obligations. Two modalities are established: Poetry and Story. Third. Regulatory Bases. General Ordinance of Subsidies of the Hon. Badajoz City Council, published in the BOP, number 21 dated February 2, 2009. Fourth. Presentation of the Work, Requirements and Deadline. 1.- Presentation of the works. The works will be without the author's signature and each work will be headed by a title. The works may be submitted by postal mail, email or in person at the Department of Culture. The works presented by postal mail will be sent in an envelope to the Department of Culture of the Excmo. Badajoz City Council, C/ Soto Mancera, 8, 06002 Badajoz, and stating on the envelope “The Flight of the Word: Poetry and Storytelling in Extremadura in 2026” and will be accompanied by an escrow or closed envelope whose outside will include: Title of the work/s and Motto or Pseudonym. Works presented in person at the Department of Culture may do so from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., except Saturdays, Sundays and holidays, and at the time of presentation they will be issued proof of participation and receipt to later withdraw the work. Inside the escrow or closed envelope you must include: Information about the Author and Responsible Declaration (that the person is not subject to any of the prohibitions that, to be a beneficiary, are established in article 13 of Law 38/2003 General of Subsidies and that he is up to date with his tax and Social Security obligations.). The works presented by email will be sent to the address flightodelapalabra@aytobadajoz.es indicating in the subject “El Vuelo de la Palabra Poesía y/o Cuento” 2026 and two PDF attachments, containing: The work/s, with each title and motto or pseudonym appearing as the file name. Data of the Author and Declaration Responsible (that the person is not subject to any of the prohibitions that, to be a beneficiary, are established in article 13 of Law 38/2003 General of Subsidies and that he is up to date with his tax and Social Security obligations.). 2.- Requirements. Participants will be able to opt, at the same time, for the short story and poetry modalities. Must meet the following requirements: The poems and stories will be original and unpublished, written in the Spanish language and with a free theme. Poems may not exceed fifty verses and stories may not exceed ten pages. They will be sent written in twelve-volume, double-spaced and under the escrow system. 3.- Deadline. The deadline for admission and reception of works will be counted from the day following the publication of the extract of this call in the BOP and will extend until March 25, 2026, at 2 p.m. Fifth.
