Hiring grants: what to check before relying on them

Hiring can unlock contribution discounts or direct subsidies, but almost all require keeping the position for a minimum time and matching the profile of the target group. Reviewing this before signing the contract avoids surprises.

1. Two different kinds of hiring support

The contribution discount applies more automatically when registering the contract, managed through Social Security. Direct hiring subsidies, however, require a prior application and decision: don't assume it before the award is confirmed.

They aren't always compatible with each other or with other grants you already receive; the rules usually include a specific compatibility section worth reading before stacking benefits.

2. Groups that usually get priority

Young people, those over 45 or 55, women, people with disabilities and the long-term unemployed frequently appear as priority groups, though each call sets its own age thresholds and time out of work.

Some schemes also require the person hired to have been registered as a jobseeker before a specific date, so it's worth checking that requirement before finalizing the contract.

3. The commitment to keep the job

Almost all grants require keeping the contract, and sometimes the total staff level, for a minimum period after the grant is paid.

If the contract ends before that deadline for reasons attributable to the company, a proportional repayment is usually required. Objective causes, such as a fair dismissal or voluntary resignation, are usually exempt, but this must be checked in each set of governing rules.
